The Concept of a Public CTO Council March 13, 2009

The SMB IT services market is so fragmented that there continues to be a challenge, even in today’s environment, in finding the right IT expert or consultant for a given project or set of tasks. In many cases, IT consultants at small businesses wear multiple hats – telecom, Windows server, network, etc. It’s difficult for one person to have all the answers on all these topics. As such, the advent of multiple forums on the Internet for raising questions and getting answers has helped tremendously.

The question at hand is how beneficial would the concept of a “Public CTO Council” be. In other words, the development of a specific forum/network of experts across various skill sets  who would be:

– Solely focused on SMB technology (software, hardware, and IT services).
– Have expertise in specific skill sets / categories that are clearly identified from a pre-selected list of what matters for SMBs
– Be on call and available (similar to the GLC Councils’ Expert Network model), possibly on a subscription basis, to other IT consultants working in firms for specific questions / to help address specific situations
– The forum could include telephone or email consultations, in-person meetings, reports or possibly even educational presentations on certain topics

Organizations like SMBTN and others already have some experts and thus the seeds for this concept – it may be a matter of leveraging existing platforms and building up the platform to allow this to happen more easily.

The SMB Technology Network recently completed beta testing on its e-newsletter service for affiliated SMBTN chapters. For years, SMBTN has attempted to find a good way to help our chapters distribute news and information about their chapter to their membership but we could never quite get it right. It looks like those days are gone.

Here is how the program works:

  • SMBTN will create a Chapter site on its Sharepoint portal for the affiliated chapter. The chapter can brand it with its own name and logo or use the default design. We will similarly customize the newsletter template for the chapter to include the chapter name, meeting details, links and other information.
  • Each Chapter Site will be integrated int the SMBTN Community Toolbar
  • The SMBTN Chapter Leader will be granted control over most elements of the site to permit customization, etc.
  • Each Chapter site comes with its own blog and wiki. Blog entries will atomatically be posted as articles in the chapter’s newsletter and e-mailed out on a weekly or monthly basis. If nothing new is posted then nothing will be mailed out. To view a sample newsletter, click here.

That’s all there is to it. Simple, efficient communication with your members at no cost to you. All you do is post to the blog and the system takes care of the rest. Chapter members may subscribe to the newsletter from the portal site and access newsletter archives. Note also that you do not need to be a member of SMBTN to sign up to receive these newsletters.

If you are an affiliated chapter that is interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact SMBTN Member Services, as we will be implementing these sites and newsletters on a first come, first served basis until all the sites are up and running.

We welcome your feedback.

While SMB Summit is produced by the SMB TechnologyNetwork, we have always seen it as an industry event to support the SMB community at large. We have always opened our doors to any vendor, consultant, solutions provider or value-added reseller actively engaged in selling technology products and services to small to medium sized businesses.

With this in mind, we recently extended a special discount to members of Managed Services Provider University  (an SMBTN partner) and the HTG Peer Networking groups who participated in the conference last year. Simply select one of these groups at sign-up and receive a $100 discount on admission to the conference.

Look for more participating membership organizations coming soon.

Over the past several months, we have spent a great deal of time developing our SMBTN Community Toolbar. We have worked hard to make sure that it could be of value to all SMB IT professionals and service providers. Here are just 10 great reasons to give it a try:

  1. Unifies sites, custom search engines, news feeds, and podcasts into an easy-to-use, central interface
  2. Unified access to all SMBTN Communities, Social Networks, Forums, etc.
  3. Custom SBS Community Search engine searches popular community blogs to assist you with issues
  4. Central chat room for users that have the toolbar installed
  5. Links to popular online tools (like EventID, DNS Reports), as well as, industry knowledgebases
  6. Links to SMBTN Partners like Trend Micro, e-Folder, LogMeIn, Speakeasy and many more…
  7. Links to Warranty Lookup tools for Dell, HP, and IBM
  8. Access to SMB newsfeeds from SMBTN and ChannelPro SMB
  9. Access to popular SMB podcasts from Karl Palachuk, Eriq Neale, Stuart Crawford and others
  10. Built-in Autotask integration permits you to lookup everything from clients and contacts to tickets

We know the last thing you need is some worthless toolbar to further clutter up your Internet Explorer or Firefox which is why we have spent so much time on this tool to make sure that you find it valuable. That’s why we have received rave reviews on it from people like Amy Babinchak, Erick Simpson and our good friend Karl Palachuk. Of course, we’re interested in your comments, as well. So please feel free to post any likes, dislikes or ideas you have for the toolbar here. We will do our best to incorporate popular suggestions into future releases of our toolbar.
